House/Wife Home/Maker - Art Reception for Amber Barker

What makes me a ‘Good Woman’?

The works in House/Wife Home/Maker are hand-stitched explorations of what makes a ‘Good Woman’. The 19th and 20th century laid the groundwork for how we have come to both idealize and demonize feminine labour. The artist is interested in this dichotomy of propagated morality and how that ultimately shapes identity and personal value.

Artist Biography:

Amber Barker received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2014.  Although trained as a Ceramicist, she uses a myriad of materials with a particular focus on affordability, the disposable, and easily accessible; a pursuit that began during her final year of study. Her works explore concepts of labour, time and gender validity in ways that aim to be both humorous and touching. She strives to create beautiful, thought-provoking work to inspire conversation and storytelling. She is currently the Artist in Resident at POST Detroit.

Artist’s info:

“Look at the garbage of this city,” he said, finally, and his fingers indicated the flying streets, “all off the garbage of this city? Where do they take it? I don’t know where they take it - but it might very well be my room.”

Rear View Mirror: Art Reception for Liz Frankland & Jack P. Johnson

Detroit artists Liz Frankland and Jack P. Johnson share a love of cinematography, especially Hitchcock, and Rear View Mirror is both a nod to a cinematic feel of familiar subjects from the past interpreted through their preferred mediums: painting + photography.

Liz's work is a combination of realism with tensions between texture, gesture and fluid paint layers that express with just enough detail in order for the piece to resonate accurately and with feeling. Jack's photography focuses intently on the detail of objects and places, zeroing in on their function and order, and evoking a nostalgic response from the viewer.

Join us for an art reception to honor their first duo exhibit, now running at the Beaubien House through December 16th.

RSVP Here.
